Munich weather is characterized by its continental tendencies; because of its proximity to the Alps and its somewhat sheltered position on the elevated plains of upper Bavaria, Munich weather retains a rather agreeable disposition, despite the obvious cold spells of winter. During winter, temperatures can often soar to 20C and dip to -10C, occasionally -15C.

Winters in Munich tend to be rather cold, although heavy rainfall is rare. During summer, conditions remain predominantly warm, although thunders are quite frequent. July’s average temperature stands at 19C.

Munich weather is largely modified by the city’s proximity to the Alps. Thanks to its rather sheltered position, between December and February Munich experiences long periods of snow and frost, and conditions tend to be a little overcast and surprisingly dry.

Springtime in Munich is a mostly variable and unpredictable affair, with cold and warm conditions vying for supremacy and fine, sunny days alternating with rainy spells. By the end of May though, temperatures begin to rise considerably heralding the emergence of summer.

As mentioned earlier, the predominantly hot weather is often intercepted by thunderstorms. Occurring mainly in the evening, these thunderstorms tend to be short in time span, disappearing as quickly as they appear. Summer temperatures can soar as high as 35C.

Lying in the shadows of its nearby mountain ranges, Munich enjoys healthy doses of precipitation. Most of the rainfall occurs during the summer season, its amounts increasing sharply towards the south. Situated closer to the Alps the south parts of the city enjoys measurably higher amounts of rainfall in comparison to the north.
